A celebration of womanhood & spirit of listening through solo theatre sharing women’s true stories.

“Women in Red” (女兒紅), a tour de force solo performance by Mo Lai Yan Chi (賴恩慈), has resonated with audiences since its debut in 2012 through its poignant, layered exploration of the female experience in contemporary society. This cultural exchange project brings a revitalised, English-language iteration of the performance to the 2025 Melbourne Fringe Festival, inviting audiences into a cross-cultural dialogue between Hong Kong and Australia.

At its heart, “Women in Red” is a deeply human work grounded in empathy and layered storytelling. Drawing on her multidisciplinary background in theatre, film, and cultural studies, Mo Lai brings together stories of women from diverse generational and social backgrounds, crafted from lived experiences. She transitions seamlessly between characters, from a young girl raised in a single-parent household to an elderly woman looking back on her life. These portraits form a rich narrative tapestry that examines the intersections of gender, family, tradition, and change.

The title refers to a traditional Chinese rice wine reserved for a daughter’s wedding—fermented and preserved over time. Like this wine, the stories within “Women in Red” are distilled and matured—personal, intimate, and yet connected to wider societal structures and histories.
